The Pivotal180’s Programs: What should I choose?
Live vs Online
What do we want? Project Finance & Financial Modeling training!
When do we want it? Now!
As summer fades into fall, there’s one thing and one thing only to do: learn Project Finance from Pivotal180. This brings up one of the most common questions we hear from individual users and organizations alike:
“Should we take this class online or live?”
Well, that depends…
This post explains the value of all our courses including online self-paced, public live-stream and in-house courses and shows where these options complement each other and where they differ.
Online Self-Paced Courses
Our online self-paced courses are the backbone of Pivotal180’s offering. Their core strength is technical detail. Videos give us plenty of time to go deeper into specific details, and users can pause, slow down, or speed up the material to fully understand each piece of a concept. For example, if you need to know the exact accounting behind the MACRS schedule, we have a video that walks through the calculation. We also have videos on financial statement build outs, DSRA accounts, and other key technical aspects of Project Finance, Tax Equity, and our sector themed courses.
For individual users, the main advantage is timing. If you need to start learning today or only have a few hours a week to study, the self-paced option makes the most sense. The video library also works as a reference for experienced professionals who need to revisit the purpose and logic behind certain concepts.
For organizations, the primary advantage is scale. If you hire off-cycle or have a small team, online programs let you scale your training at any time, for one person or a small group.
The online programs do have limits: they’re static, and the self-paced model requires self-motivation. We’ve built a broad, deep library of videos and keep creating new material, but a complex or nuanced training need can be a poor fit for the online format. Our courses also run up to 30+ hours, so working through the material on your own time takes focus and dedication. We have designed and structured great, accredited courses, but you have to structure the time to complete them.
Live Stream and In-House Courses
We offer two versions of live courses: public and in-house. Our public course are delivered live on Zoom. Our in-house courses are delivered at the client’s office, live on Zoom, or through a combination of both.
Our live courses explore and apply the intangibles of Project Finance, Tax Equity, & our sector courses, along with the analysis needed to address them. They let us cut through the technical details and get to the core of a concept, essentially answering the question: “of all the aspects of these transactions, which ones matter most?”
Live courses put a larger focus on direct application. The format allows us to assign homework and review it in a practical way. Discussing the homework shows us how readily a student can move from concept to practice. It also lets us give direct feedback and expand on the topic with real transaction stories and examples of actual issues from live deals.
Live courses still cover the technical components of transactions, with emphasis on core first principles (such as debt sizing) or particularly complex topics (like tax capital accounts).
Live courses also give learners the chance to discuss these topics with practitioners and peers. Many of these concepts are abstract (time value of money, for example), so being able to apply and explain them concretely is a crucial job skill.
Conclusion
We designed our course offerings to complement each other. The online courses provide a depth of technical detail you can return to as a resource, while the live courses expand on what matters most among a transaction’s many priorities. Each also works well on its own to give our learners the best possible outcome.
So, when the question “should we take this class online or live?” comes up, the answer depends on a few things: your needs, your timeline, your budget, and the number of learners, among other factors.
